The Will to Resist

Boris Thuginski Didn't Retire. The Bastard Changed Classes.

Or: From Thug to Lawfully Neutral Paladin, With Absolutely No Refunds

A Jerry's Marginalia — by Department of Petty Affairs

Somewhere along the way, something interesting happened.

Boris Thuginski, our resident stubborn bastard, apparently retired.

Or at least, that's what we thought.

The Thug was gone.

The Lawfully Neutral Paladin had arrived.

New armor. New philosophy. Probably an enormous amount of paperwork.

But after a little conversation, we realized something.

Boris never actually retired.

He evolved.

And no, this wasn't some magical transformation involving a glowing sword, a celestial choir, and a suspiciously attractive goddess offering him a new character class.

Although, knowing this fucking multiverse, I wouldn't rule it out.

Boris was always stubborn.

He stood his ground.

He wasn't particularly interested in being liked, and he certainly wasn't going to tolerate somebody pushing him around.

But somewhere between the disappointments, the ridiculous encounters, and the financial lessons of the LocaLuv era, something changed.

Not his backbone.

His judgment about when to use it.

The Thug might have confronted every asshole who wandered into his territory.

The Paladin looks at the same asshole, considers the situation, and asks:

"Is this worth my time, my money, or my peace?"

If the answer is no?

He walks.

Not because he's afraid.

Not because he's surrendering.

But because not every fight deserves a participant.

And perhaps that's what growth actually looks like sometimes.

Not becoming a completely different person.

Not pretending the old version of yourself never existed.

But taking what was useful, recognizing what wasn't, and moving forward.

The anger doesn't necessarily disappear.

The stubbornness certainly doesn't.

And thank fuck the sense of humor survived, because otherwise the Department of Petty Affairs would have to file for bankruptcy.

Instead, the frustration becomes something else.

Sometimes a boundary.

Sometimes a lesson.

Sometimes an absolutely ridiculous article about humanity operating a twenty-four-hour Bullshit Manufacturing Plant™.

And sometimes?

It's just a little note on a blog, documenting the moment you realized your character had changed.

No dramatic farewell.

No funeral.

No twenty-one-gun salute.

Just a Thug who eventually learned that keeping his sword sheathed could be every bit as powerful as drawing it.

Boris Thuginski didn't die.

He leveled up.

Same bastard.

Different class.

Better judgment.

And somewhere in the background, Gerald the Cactus is demanding that he complete a mandatory character-respecialization form.

Boris: "Fuck off."

Paladin: "Respectfully, fuck off."

Jerry: "CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, MOTHERFUCKERS."
