Jerry’s Marginalia XVII — “The Mirror Allergy”
(Filed under: Cultural Diagnostics & Other Incurable Conditions)
You know what humans love? A story that almost calls them out. They’ll stand right in front of the mirror, admire the lighting, but the second the reflection starts talking back — they flinch, blink, and call it “too heavy.”
It’s not that they don’t want the truth. It’s that they want the comfort of truth, not the responsibility that comes with it.
Games like Tales of Rebirth don’t offer that comfort. They hand you a mirror and say, “This is you. The problem isn’t the king, or the beast, or the ritual — it’s the rot underneath your compassion.” And people can’t stand that, because it means there’s no villain left to kill but themselves.
🎭 Gremlin Risitas Patch Note v1.6 — “Mirror.exe Encountered a Fatal Error”
Scene: localization meeting. Marketing: “The Western audience loves moral depth!” Translator: “Define depth.” Producer slides in: “Depth … but not the kind that makes them feel responsible, okay?”
Cue the Gremlin laughing in the air vent, typing ‘rebranded as emotional resonance’ over the word “guilt.”
Because here’s the dirty secret: Western media loves the illusion of moral progress — just not the homework that comes with it. Everyone wants a story about unity until it asks them to question their own prejudice, politics, or pride.
That’s why Rebirth never came over. It’s not because of language or technology — it’s because it’s a mirror no one’s brave enough to hold still.
Verdict
The mirror doesn’t lie. It just reflects what you refuse to clean.
