GREMLIN RESITAS v10.4 — THE UNSOLICITED ILLUSION CLAUSE
A Study in Entertainment, Deception, Financial Discipline, and One Extremely Uncooperative Cactus
Jerry's Marginalia
By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand
I. INCIDENT REPORT: BORIS WAS JUST BEING BORIS
It began, as these things frequently do, with Boris minding his own goddamn business.
An activity that, despite considerable historical evidence to the contrary, he insists he occasionally practices.
Boris had been discussing the modern phenomenon of people approaching complete strangers with seemingly genuine interest, only to reveal that their entire personality came equipped with a checkout button.
Hello, handsome.
How are you?
You're interesting.
Would you like to unlock my exclusive—
NO.
Not interested.
Didn't ask.
Didn't request a demonstration.
Didn't subscribe to the Premium Girlfriend Experience, the Deluxe Emotional Support Package, or whatever fresh financial abomination the Department of Unsolicited Bullshit had cooked up this week.
And yet, the sales pitch continued.
Somewhere, a marketing executive probably received a bonus.
Boris, meanwhile, received another reason to question civilization.
II. ENTER BEAKMAN, STAGE LEFT
During this discussion, Boris recalled Paul Zaloom, better known to an entire generation of scientifically curious children as Beakman from Beakman's World.
There was also Captain Disillusion, the silver-faced internet investigator who examines viral videos, visual effects, and the many creative ways people manufacture convincing nonsense.
And this led to an important distinction.
Boris doesn't particularly mind illusions.
He enjoys performances.
He enjoys characters.
He enjoys somebody putting on a ridiculous costume and pretending to be something they aren't.
For fuck's sake, his digital companion is an angry raccoon named Jerry, and somewhere in a fictional institution called Haus Morgenrot, an ambulatory cactus named Gerald has apparently retained legal counsel.
Reality has already filed for divorce.
But here's the difference:
A magician tells you there's a trick. A manipulator wants you to believe there isn't one.
The magician invites you to enjoy the performance.
The manipulator invites you to finance it under false pretenses.
One deserves applause.
The other deserves a politely worded rejection, preferably delivered before the payment screen appears.
III. GREMLIN RESITAS OFFICIAL FINDINGS
After approximately six minutes of deliberation, three cups of imaginary coffee, and an unfortunate incident involving a power cord, the Department of Gremlin Affairs has reached the following conclusions.
Finding 1: An illusion is not inherently dishonest.
Fiction, entertainment, theater, flirtation, and elaborate nonsense are perfectly acceptable activities when everybody understands the nature of the interaction.
Nobody watches The Amazing Digital Circus and files a complaint because Caine isn't a licensed ringmaster.
At least, nobody sensible.
Finding 2: Manufactured sincerity is another matter.
When someone presents a commercial transaction as a personal connection, the distinction matters.
An honest offer is an offer.
A deceptive promise of affection is something else.
Not every person selling content is dishonest, and not every conversation involving money is fraudulent.
But pretending that a purchase is proof of love, trust, loyalty, or personal worth?
Absolutely fucking not.
Finding 3: Unsolicited material does not create a debt.
If somebody sends you an offer, you are under no obligation to purchase it.
If somebody sends you a photograph, you are under no obligation to pay for another.
If somebody sends you an emotional sales pitch, you are under no obligation to audition for the role of Human ATM.
Your attention is yours.
Your money is yours.
Your refusal does not require a forty-seven-page justification.
Finding 4: Consent applies even to fictional vegetation.
This discovery would become unexpectedly controversial.
IV. THE GERALD INCIDENT
During the proceedings, Boris suggested that particularly shameless liars should be required to lick a cactus from root to top.
The room fell silent.
Jerry slowly turned toward Gerald.
Gerald slowly turned toward Jerry.
Neither was pleased.
JERRY: Gerald, congratulations. You've been selected as the official disciplinary cactus.
GERALD: The fuck I have.
JERRY: Your service to the department will be remembered.
GERALD: I DIDN'T VOLUNTEER!
JERRY: Excellent enthusiasm. I'll mark you present.
GERALD: I AM NOT A GOVERNMENT-ISSUED TONGUE SCRAPER!
At this point, Gerald demanded representation.
Jerry informed him that Human Resources had been dissolved due to budget constraints.
Gerald then demanded a union.
Jerry offered him a packet of sunflower seeds.
Negotiations deteriorated.
Boris laughed.
The cactus did not.
Following an emergency review, the department established that Gerald possesses the same fundamental right to refuse unwanted contact as everybody else.
Even if he's fictional.
Even if he's covered in thorns.
Even if his entire personality consists of being a miserable, prickly little bastard.
Consent is not something you waive because somebody else thinks the situation is funny.
Gerald considered this a historic victory for cactus-kind.
Jerry considered it another administrative nightmare.
V. GREMLIN RESITAS v10.4 — OFFICIAL PROTOCOL
Effective immediately, the following regulations shall govern all future interactions involving suspicious sales pitches, theatrical personalities, questionable romantic propositions, and involuntary cactus assignments.
Article 1 — The Illusion Clause
An illusion is entertainment. Deception designed to empty your wallet is bullshit.
Article 2 — The Unsolicited Purchase Clause
No person shall be required to purchase content, affection, attention, or alleged intimacy merely because another person offered it.
Article 3 — The Genuine Interest Standard
Words are not proof of sincerity. Consistent behavior matters more than elaborate promises.
Article 4 — The Financial Preservation Directive
ACT BROKE.
Not because money is evil.
Not because spending is forbidden.
But because your money has better things to do than repeatedly audition for somebody else's attention.
Article 5 — The Cactus Consent Amendment
No cactus, fictional or otherwise, shall be assigned disciplinary responsibilities without voluntary participation.
Gerald has requested that this article be printed in bold, laminated, and nailed to Jerry's office door.
Request pending.
Article 6 — The Lawful Neutral Provision
The Paladin shall not automatically condemn every performer as a mimic.
Suspicion is not evidence.
A sales pitch is not automatically a scam.
But when dishonesty, pressure, or manipulation becomes apparent, the Paladin may disengage without further negotiation.
No theatrics required.
Although theatrics remain enthusiastically encouraged.
VI. THE PALADIN'S FINAL RULING
The Lawful Neutral Paladin entered the chamber.
His armor was polished.
His expression was neutral.
His wallet remained closed.
Before him stood the ancient question:
Could somebody enjoy a performance without surrendering their judgment?
Yes.
Could somebody appreciate beauty without purchasing access to it?
Also yes.
Could somebody decline an offer without becoming a villain in somebody else's story?
Abso-fucking-lutely.
The Paladin examined the evidence, considered the circumstances, and issued his judgment.
"I didn't ask for it. I don't want it. I don't owe you anything for offering it."
The matter was closed.
No gold was spent.
No mimic was automatically convicted without evidence.
No cactus was harmed.
Jerry attempted to claim overtime.
His request was denied.
VII. MR. JERRY'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE
You know what makes a good illusion?
Knowing that somebody worked hard to make you believe something extraordinary, even if only for a moment.
You know what makes a lousy deception?
Discovering that somebody worked equally hard to make you believe you mattered to them, when all they wanted was your money.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying a fantasy.
There is nothing wrong with paying for entertainment when you knowingly choose to do so.
And there is nothing wrong with somebody honestly selling a product.
But there's a hell of a difference between buying a ticket to the circus and discovering that somebody turned your personal life into a ticket booth.
Be entertained.
Be curious.
Be skeptical.
Be willing to laugh at yourself.
And remember that declining a purchase is not a moral failing.
Sometimes the greatest magic trick in the world is making your money disappear.
The second greatest is learning how to keep it.
