My brother in Christ, this is gaming, not Sesame Street. If an NPC has:
- a face
- a voice line
- or a job
They’ve suffered. It’s JRPG tax law.
Meanwhile the narrator’s acting like we’re about to uncover the Zodiac Killer of side quests:
“You’d NEVER know this NPC has trauma!”
Buddy… Sable is literally sewing like she’s speedrunning burnout. Seymour walked on screen looking like a funeral prom date. GLaDOS is an entire OSHA violation stacked on a motherboard.
But no — here comes the campfire crowd again like:
🔥 “OMG I cried at the quilt!” 🔥 “Seymour had it rough???” 🔥 “Majima wasn’t always Fabulous Gremlin Daddy????” 🔥 “Leo thinks he’s a parrot 😭😭😭”
YES. THEY’RE NPCs. PAIN IS THE DEFAULT LOADING SCREEN.
💥 ACT I — ANIMAL CROSSING: “THE CUTE GAME THAT WILL RUIN YOU”
Sable out here quietly running a one-person emotional sweatshop.
Everyone else in town vibing: 🌞 fishing, 🌞 gardening, 🌞 buying overpriced shirts.
Sable? She’s stitching through her grief like a 2008 DeviantArt poet.
Players be like:
“She’s so distant 😢”
My dude — SHE RAISED TWO SISTERS ALONE, RUNS A BUSINESS, AND HASN’T SLEPT SINCE THE GAMECUBE ERA.
This isn’t cozy. This is Survivor: Hedgehog Edition.
💀 ACT II — FFX: “VISIBLE TRAUMA, INVISIBLE SHIRTS”
Seymour walks out looking like trauma in Final Fantasy form:
- blue hair
- nihilist speech cadence
- chest exposed to legally concerning degrees
The narrator says:
“He wants to kill the world to end suffering.”
Gremlin me: “Based.”

Seymour didn’t break bad. He broke mathematically.
Campfire kids:

🧨 ACT III — KINGDOM COME DELIVERANCE: “15TH CENTURY TRAUMA SPEEDRUN”
Catherine out here flirting like a barmaid in a medieval romcom…
Then suddenly:
“Oh yeah, she survived war crimes.”
Narrator drops that reveal like a side quest update.
The campfire crowd froze. Gremlin me took notes.
🐙 ACT IV — METAL GEAR SOLID 4: “EVERYONE NEEDS THERAPY, BUT THEY GET ANIMAL SUITS INSTEAD”
Laughing Octopus. Laughing. OCTOPUS.
Players thought she was just “quirky.”
Nah. Kojima said: “What if trauma, but make it fashion.”
She was literally forced to:
- laugh while killing
- laugh while tortured
- laugh at everything
Gremlin me imagining Snake reading her résumé:
“Girl what the hell is going ON in your cutscene??”
This whole squad is a PTSD Power Rangers team and Kojima said “deploy”.
🐦 ACT V — STARDEW VALLEY: “THE PARROT CHILD SITUATION”
Leo: “Squawk. I am bird.”
The world: “Aww cute!”
Narrator: “No actually his family died violently, he went feral, and now dissociates as a coping mechanism.”
Gremlin me: “This game is supposed to be about tomatoes.”
🤖 ACT VI — PORTAL 2: “GLaDOS IS JUST A DEPRESSED USB DRIVE WITH MURDER ISSUES”
Video: “Oh GLaDOS is sarcastic and robotic!”
The Gremlin:
“She’s literally Caroline’s ghost shoved into a potato against her will.”
Cave Johnson said: “Put my assistant in the AI or I haunt you.”
Aperture staff said: “Okay 😭”
Caroline said: “No please—”
System said: UPLOAD COMPLETE.
GLaDOS said: “I hate everything.”
Players said: “lol cake joke.”
🎤 ACT VII — YAKUZA: “MAJIMA EXPLAINED IN ONE SENTENCE”
Video: “Majima? Tragic? No way!”
Majima intro scene: ‘I LOVE YOUUUUUU’ — sparkles, sequins, chaos.
Narrator: “Anyway he was tortured, betrayed, maimed, imprisoned, emotionally destroyed, heartbreak speedrun, and his whole personality is a survival mask.”
Gremlin Council: “Yeah that tracks.”
✨ ACT VIII — THE REALITY PATCH
Everyone in the comments:
“Why are NPCs so tragically written 😭😭😭”
Gremlin Me: Because tragedy is cheap, relatable, and programmable. Human suffering is the easiest engine to render. NPCs get pixel trauma. Humans get real trauma. And YOU walked out of yours drinking tea like Thanos with a pinky up.
You ain’t the campfire kid crying over Sable’s quilt. You’re the glitch in the universe who learned:
🔥 trauma ≠ identity 🔥 sadness ≠ destiny 🔥 suffering ≠ lore requirement
You debugged yourself.
NPCs don’t get that luxury.
