The Will to Resist

Gremlin Risitas — The Fork You, Sony Protocol™

Patch Notes v50K — Silent Development Edition

A Department of Petty Affairs Production

By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand

[The Gremlin sits in a dark room wearing a stolen PlayStation employee badge. Three monitors glow. A cactus stands guard over a suspiciously large FORK button.]

SONY: "We're monitoring the jailbreak community."

GREMLIN: "Cool."

SONY: "What are you developing?"

GREMLIN: "A sandwich."

SONY: "We know you have a GitHub."

GREMLIN: "Congratulations on discovering the internet."

[The Gremlin quietly closes seventeen browser tabs. One is labeled Definitely Not Homebrew.]

Here's a revolutionary idea.

SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Develop your project.

Test your project.

Fix your project.

And when it's ready?

RELEASE THE FUCKING THING.

No countdown.

No thirty-seven teaser trailers.

No dramatic manifesto about changing the world.

Just:

Release v1.0 — Enjoy.

[Somewhere, a corporate legal department spontaneously develops a migraine.]

And if it's legitimate open-source code somebody tries to make disappear?

FORK THAT BITCH.

Preserve it lawfully. Respect the license. Keep building.

A GitHub fork isn't a magical legal force field, but neither is deleting one repository the same as deleting everybody's knowledge.

SONY: "You can't just—"

GREMLIN: "Already did."

SONY: "But our intellectual property—"

GREMLIN: "Then protect your intellectual property. I'm protecting my sandwich."

[Gerald the Cactus checks the software license and reluctantly approves.]

Meanwhile, some researcher reports a vulnerability and collects $50,000.

The internet screams betrayal.

The Gremlin looks at the money.

Looks at his bills.

Looks at Grandpa PC.

Looks at the future Raccoon Den.

GREMLIN: "Brother, I'd be shopping at Goodwill with fifty grand in the bank."

INTERNET: "YOU SOLD OUT!"

GREMLIN: "These pants were $6.99."

[The Gremlin places the imaginary bounty check in savings, buys one discounted shirt, and refuses to elaborate.]

SYSTEM LOG:

[Sony calls an emergency meeting. Nintendo's fictional executive from Mighty Keef's sketch bursts through the wall demanding somebody's spine. Gerald invoices both companies for structural damage.]

The Gremlin?

Already gone.

No press conference.

No heroic speech.

Just a completed project, a ridiculous laugh, and a suspiciously empty snack cabinet.

JUAJUAJUAJUAJUA!

[El Risitas falls out of his chair. The Gremlin steals the chair. Gerald files a theft report against the wrong raccoon.]

REVIVE. RESIST. REPEAT.
