The Will to Resist

I DIDN'T ASK LIFE TO BE EASY. I ASKED IT TO STOP BEING A FUCKING ASSHOLE.

Jerry's Marginalia — By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand

You ever get tired?

Not the kind of tired where you need eight hours of sleep and a nice warm blanket.

I'm talking about the kind of tired where you wake up, look at the ceiling, and wonder what fresh administrative fuckery the universe has prepared for you today.

Because apparently existing isn't enough.

You have to work.

You have to pay bills.

You have to follow rules.

You have to adapt.

You have to be patient.

You have to remain professional.

You have to be understanding.

You have to smile.

And when everything goes sideways?

YOU HAVE TO BE RESILIENT.

Oh, fuck off.

I've been resilient.

I've been adaptable.

I've been patient.

I've been professional when I would've preferred to communicate exclusively through interpretive profanity.

And I'm getting a little fucking tired of being told that suffering is somehow a privilege.

WELCOME TO THE ADAPTATION OLYMPICS

Let me tell you about adapting.

You get a job.

The job has rules.

Fine.

You learn the rules.

Then you discover the rules have rules.

And those rules have supervisors.

And those supervisors have opinions.

And apparently even the way you carry your fucking belongings is now a matter of institutional concern.

So you adapt.

You change your bag.

You put away your phone.

You follow the schedule.

You watch the hallway.

You deal with people who have apparently decided that patience is an optional character attribute.

You spend twelve hours doing your best to remain alert, professional, and reasonably sane.

Then you go home.

Sleep.

Wake up.

And do it all over again.

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE UNLOCKED ANOTHER DAY OF THE SAME FUCKING NONSENSE!

And here's the funniest part.

You don't even have to love the job.

You can hate every miserable minute of it.

You can count the hours until your shift ends.

You can fantasize about throwing your uniform into the nearest volcano.

But when payday comes?

Oh, suddenly that job has one very attractive quality.

THE WHOLE FUCKING CHECK.

Because money doesn't care whether you enjoyed earning it.

The electric company doesn't ask whether your workplace respected your feelings.

The landlord doesn't accept emotional growth as legal tender.

And the grocery store has yet to introduce a payment option labeled "I HAVE LEARNED A VALUABLE LESSON."

I MADE A MISTAKE. I AM NOT A MISTAKE.

Now here's something that apparently needs to be explained to the universe.

A person can make a mistake without being a failure.

I know.

Revolutionary.

Somebody alert the fucking philosophers.

You can misunderstand a procedure.

You can fail to meet a standard.

You can make a decision that turns out to be wrong.

And yes, there may be consequences.

I'm not asking for a magical exemption from accountability.

I'M ASKING PEOPLE TO STOP CONFUSING ACCOUNTABILITY WITH THE COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF SOMEBODY'S WORTH.

If I got something wrong, explain it.

If I need training, provide it.

If there's a problem, address it.

If a consequence is necessary, make it fair.

But don't expect me to believe that one failure automatically erases every hour I showed up, every instruction I followed, every adjustment I made, and every ounce of effort I invested.

Because it doesn't.

A mistake is an event.

It isn't a fucking biography.

And losing a job doesn't mean losing the ability to work.

It means losing a job.

Unfortunately, it also means losing the income.

And THAT is where the real nightmare begins.

THE BILLS HAVE DECLINED YOUR REQUEST FOR COMPASSION

You know what happens when your paycheck disappears?

Nothing stops.

Absolutely fucking nothing.

The rent doesn't take a vacation.

The phone bill doesn't develop empathy.

The grocery store doesn't say, "Oh, you've been through a difficult month? Please accept these complimentary chicken breasts."

No.

Everybody still wants their money.

And everybody wants it on time.

Meanwhile, you're waiting.

Waiting for a decision.

Waiting for an application response.

Waiting for somebody to answer an email.

Waiting for an employer to decide whether your existence is worth sixteen, seventeen, or eighteen dollars an hour.

Waiting while the calendar keeps moving.

And the bills keep arriving.

And people keep telling you to be patient.

PATIENT WITH WHAT, MOTHERFUCKER?

My patience doesn't pay interest.

My patience doesn't buy groceries.

My patience doesn't refill my bank account.

And my patience sure as fuck doesn't make another week of uncertainty disappear.

I'm not demanding that somebody hand me a fortune.

I'm asking for an opportunity to earn a living without feeling like the entire universe is holding my financial stability hostage.

BUT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO STAY POSITIVE!

Ah, yes.

Positivity.

The universal solution offered by people who don't have to pay your bills.

"Look on the bright side!"

"Everything happens for a reason!"

"Maybe this is a blessing in disguise!"

"Something better is coming!"

Wonderful.

Can I deposit that blessing at the bank?

Does the bright side have direct deposit?

Can I pay my phone bill with the promise of personal growth?

No?

THEN PLEASE STOP TRYING TO CASH MY SUFFERING INTO YOUR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE COLLECTION.

Sometimes life isn't beautiful.

Sometimes it isn't fair.

Sometimes you do your best, make a mistake, suffer the consequences, and still have to figure out how to survive afterward.

There's no uplifting soundtrack.

No slow-motion montage.

No wise old man standing on a mountain explaining why everything had to happen.

Sometimes it's just you, a dwindling balance, and another fucking Monday.

And I'm allowed to be angry about that.

EVERYBODY WANTS SOMETHING

Here's another marvelous feature of adulthood.

Everybody wants something.

Your money.

Your time.

Your attention.

Your cooperation.

Your patience.

Your understanding.

Your sympathy.

Your availability.

And when you're running low on all of them?

Somebody still manages to show up with an invoice.

It's almost impressive.

You could be standing in the middle of an emotional desert holding an empty water bottle, and somebody would wander over asking if you've got enough to fill their swimming pool.

No.

I don't.

And I'm tired of pretending I do.

I AM NOT AN INFINITE RESOURCE.

I cannot keep giving away money I don't have.

I cannot keep offering patience when I'm already exhausted.

I cannot keep rearranging my life to accommodate people who won't even acknowledge what it costs me.

And I certainly cannot keep pretending everything is wonderful because somebody else finds my frustration inconvenient.

If that makes me unpleasant company for a while?

So be it.

I'm not running for mayor of Everybody Likes Me.

NO, I DON'T WANT TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON THROUGH SUFFERING

Here's a question.

Why does every miserable experience have to become a fucking character-development arc?

Why can't something simply suck?

Why can't I say, "That was awful, I hated it, and I wish it hadn't happened"?

Why must every hardship be transformed into a motivational speech?

I've learned lessons.

I've developed patience.

I've adapted.

I've endured.

I've survived.

At what point does the universe stop handing out homework?

Because I don't need another lesson in perseverance.

I NEED A FUCKING PAYCHECK.

I need stability.

I need breathing room.

I need the ability to make a small purchase without wondering whether I've just sabotaged next week's groceries.

I need a day where the biggest problem is deciding what to watch on television.

I need ordinary, boring, uneventful life.

Not glory.

Not power.

Not revenge.

JUST A LITTLE FUCKING PEACE.

ANGER IS NOT A PERSONALITY DEFECT

Now, before somebody gets excited, let me clarify something.

Being angry doesn't give me permission to hurt people.

It doesn't make every decision I make correct.

It doesn't mean everybody who disagrees with me is an enemy.

And it certainly doesn't mean I should become the same kind of asshole I'm complaining about.

But anger itself?

Anger isn't automatically wrong.

Sometimes anger is the perfectly reasonable response to an unreasonable situation.

Sometimes it's what happens when you've spent too long swallowing frustration because you were trying to keep the peace.

Sometimes it's what remains when you've run out of polite ways to describe how badly something affected you.

And sometimes?

Sometimes you just want to scream:

FUCK THIS. FUCK THAT. AND FUCK WHATEVER NEW BULLSHIT TOMORROW HAS ORDERED FOR DELIVERY.

Not because you hate humanity.

Not because you want the world destroyed.

But because you're exhausted.

And because you've spent so much time trying to keep everything together that you're beginning to resent being expected to do it without complaint.

THE PALADIN IS STILL STANDING

So where does that leave us?

Am I happy?

Not particularly.

Am I satisfied?

Fuck no.

Am I going to pretend this has been a wonderful opportunity for self-discovery?

Absolutely fucking not.

But I'm still here.

Not because suffering is noble.

Not because the universe deserves applause for putting me through it.

And not because I'm particularly interested in collecting another inspirational life lesson.

I'm here because I still want things.

I want my income back.

I want my independence back.

I want to enjoy my hobbies without guilt.

I want to laugh at ridiculous cartoon villains.

I want to shake imaginary maracas in the face of fictional authority figures.

I want to be able to wake up and think about something other than money.

I WANT MY FUCKING LIFE BACK.

And I'm not going to apologize for being angry that it's taking so long.

FINAL VERDICT

To the universe:

I've received your correspondence.

I've reviewed your policies.

I've endured your delays.

I've attended your mandatory seminars in disappointment, uncertainty, and financial inconvenience.

And after careful consideration, I have reached the following conclusion:

YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS FUCKING ATROCIOUS.

I didn't ask for a perfect life.

I didn't ask for unlimited wealth.

I didn't ask to be exempt from mistakes or consequences.

I asked for a fair chance to work, earn money, pay my bills, and enjoy a little peace.

And somehow, even that feels like a luxury.

So no.

I'm not going to thank suffering for making me stronger.

I'm not going to pretend losing something important was secretly wonderful.

And I'm not going to confuse a bad chapter with the entire story.

I MADE MISTAKES.

I ADAPTED.

I WORKED.

I LOST SOMETHING I NEEDED.

AND I'M STILL FUCKING ANGRY ABOUT IT.

That anger doesn't have to be my destination.

But I'm allowed to acknowledge where I am.

Because I didn't ask life to be easy.

I ASKED IT TO STOP BEING A FUCKING ASSHOLE.
