The Will to Resist

I HUNTED THE HYDRA. THE REAL MONSTER WAS MY OWN FUCKING WALLET.

Jerry's Marginalia — A Financial Horror Story in Three Acts

By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand

There comes a time in every man's life when he must confront the terrible possibility that the idiot responsible for his problems is not his employer, his relatives, the government, or some suspiciously attractive woman offering him financial opportunities over the internet.

Sometimes, ladies and gentlemen, the idiot is the man in the fucking mirror.

And sometimes that idiot has been paying fourteen dollars a month for a subscription he forgot existed.

Welcome to my TED Talk.

Bring soap.

ACT I: THE HYDRA OF THE BATHROOM

Deep within the cursed halls of a residence known only as Haus Morgenrot: The House of Entropy, there dwelled a creature.

Not a man.

Not a beast.

A biological violation of the Geneva Conventions.

THE HYDRA.

A creature whose natural habitat was the bathroom, whose favorite recreational activity was apparently conducting industrial-scale chemical experiments with liquid hand soap.

Twenty-eight ounces.

TWENTY. EIGHT. FUCKING. OUNCES.

A bottle of soap that should have lasted a respectable amount of time would enter that bathroom full of optimism and emerge looking like it had survived three hurricanes, a chemical spill, and a particularly enthusiastic prison shower.

Where did it go?

Nobody knew.

Was he washing his hands?

His feet?

His sins?

Was he constructing a slip-and-slide to the fucking moon?

Scientists refused to comment.

The United Nations declined to intervene.

Gerald the Cactus requested diplomatic immunity.

Naturally, I began suspecting the Hydra of every mysterious household expenditure.

Missing soap? HYDRA.

Unexplained household consumption? HYDRA.

Bank account looking suspiciously malnourished? Probably that goddamn HYDRA.

For months, the creature stood accused in the Court of Household Bullshit.

And then, on one otherwise unremarkable October evening, the prosecution's entire case suffered a catastrophic reversal.

ACT II: FIVE ACCOUNTS AND A PARTRIDGE IN A SCAM TREE

Earlier that day, our hero had been entertaining a peculiar business proposition from an individual we'll call Madame Tashington von Handshake.

The proposition was simple.

Create accounts.

Verify accounts.

Produce five of the little bastards.

Receive compensation.

At one point, the figure reached fifty dollars per account.

Five accounts.

Two hundred and fifty dollars.

A suspiciously convenient sum for a man whose financial situation currently resembled a raccoon fighting three collection agencies inside a burning dumpster.

But the Paladin had questions.

What were these accounts for?

Who would control them?

Why did someone need five verified identities wandering around the internet like unattended shopping carts?

And most importantly:

WHY DOES EVERY FUCKING OPPORTUNITY REQUIRE ME TO PRETEND SOMETHING IS NORMAL WHEN IT CLEARLY ISN'T?

So the Paladin declined the account-production enterprise.

No heroic trumpet sounded.

No angel descended from heaven.

Nobody handed him a novelty check.

He simply retained ownership of his dignity and continued being broke.

A financially unrewarding victory, admittedly.

But a victory nonetheless.

Then came the next adventure.

ACT III: THE CALL WAS COMING FROM INSIDE THE WALMART

Our hero logged into an old email account.

Nothing unusual.

Just another digital archaeological expedition through the ruins of his own forgotten registrations.

And there it was.

WALMART FUCKING PLUS.

Active.

Alive.

Feeding.

Like a subscription-based tapeworm wearing a blue vest.

Twelve dollars and ninety-five cents.

Plus taxes.

Fourteen dollars and two cents disappearing from the bank every month with the quiet professionalism of a Victorian pickpocket.

August.

FOURTEEN DOLLARS.

September.

FOURTEEN MORE DOLLARS.

October.

ANOTHER FOURTEEN DOLLARS.

Forty-two dollars and six cents.

Gone.

Not stolen.

Not embezzled.

Not consumed by the Hydra.

AUTHORIZED BY THE VERY FUCKING MAN CONDUCTING THE INVESTIGATION.

Somewhere in the distance, a judge dropped his gavel.

The jury gasped.

Gerald the Cactus fell out of his flowerpot.

And the Hydra, that soap-guzzling aquatic war criminal, received the first acquittal of his miserable existence.

Not for the soap.

Absolutely not for the soap.

The soap charges remain pending before an international tribunal.

But the Walmart+ subscription?

NOT. FUCKING. GUILTY.

The Paladin had spent months searching for the financial parasite.

He had interrogated the household.

He had examined the expenditures.

He had blamed the beast in the bathroom.

And the entire time, the subscription had been sitting inside his own account, politely extracting money like a corporate mosquito with excellent customer service.

ACT IV: THE EXECUTION OF THE SUBSCRIPTION

There was no negotiation.

No heartfelt farewell.

No opportunity for Walmart to explain how valuable its membership was.

No touching slideshow of groceries arriving at someone's front door while a golden retriever wagged its tail.

The Paladin located the cancellation button.

And pressed it.

BEGONE, YOU BLUE-VESTED BASTARD.

The membership was canceled.

The benefits would continue until November 2, because apparently the creature had already eaten its final meal.

And just like that, approximately $168 a year in future spending was sentenced to oblivion.

Was the man rich?

No.

Was he employed?

Also no.

Could he suddenly afford a yacht, a mansion, or a gold-plated gaming computer?

Absolutely fucking not.

But he had stopped one small, recurring financial hemorrhage.

And sometimes that's what victory looks like.

Not a million dollars.

Not a miracle.

Just fourteen dollars that won't disappear next month.

ACT V: THE PALADIN INVESTIGATES HIMSELF

There is a lesson here.

An ugly lesson.

An inconvenient lesson.

A lesson that deserves to be carved into a bathroom wall with a rusty spoon.

BEFORE ACCUSING THE HYDRA, CHECK YOUR FUCKING SUBSCRIPTIONS.

Because the world is full of genuine parasites.

There are predatory subscriptions.

There are questionable business propositions.

There are corporations that make signing up effortless and leaving feel like escaping an Egyptian pyramid.

And yes, there are relatives capable of making twenty-eight ounces of liquid soap disappear faster than a government agency can lose paperwork.

But occasionally?

The monster is you.

Not because you're evil.

Not because you're malicious.

But because you signed up for some bullshit, forgot about it, and let the billing department quietly harvest your wallet like a goddamn potato field.

The Paladin's doctrine remains unchanged:

ACT BROKE.

BE BORING.

IF IT COSTS ME, I'LL LET IT GO.

And perhaps a new commandment is necessary:

THOU SHALT AUDIT THY OWN BULLSHIT BEFORE BLAMING THE BATHROOM CRYPTID.

As for the Hydra?

He remains under investigation for crimes against soap.

The Walmart+ allegations have been dismissed with prejudice.

Gerald the Cactus has returned to his windowsill.

And somewhere, in the darkness of the internet, another forgotten subscription trembles.

Because the Paladin has discovered the cancellation button.

And he is no longer afraid to fucking use it.

MR. JERRY'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE

If you have enough forgotten subscriptions, congratulations: you've accidentally founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to making corporations slightly richer.

Check your bank statements.

Cancel what you don't use.

Admit when you fucked up.

And for the love of everything holy, stop blaming your nephew for charges you authorized yourself.

Unless it's the soap.

That little bastard still has some explaining to do.

Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand

Financially irresponsible woodland correspondent, part-time legal counsel to Gerald the Cactus, and sworn enemy of automatic renewal.

FINAL VERDICT:

THE HYDRA IS INNOCENT OF WALMART+.

THE PALADIN IS GUILTY OF FINANCIAL NEGLIGENCE.

THE SUBSCRIPTION HAS BEEN EXECUTED.

COURT IS FUCKING ADJOURNED.
