There’s a quiet moment most systems rely on.
It’s the moment when you’re unsure.
Not broke. Not desperate. Just undecided.
That’s where the fees live.
I had a cart open. Five items. Reasonable. I didn’t hit the $35 threshold. (Read: Walmart+). Shipping jumped to seven dollars. Driver fee added four more dollars. Suddenly I’m being asked to spend real money to finish thinking.
Not for urgency. Not for necessity. Just for the crime of not knowing yet.
That’s when I stopped.
Not because Walmart is evil. Not because the system is broken. But because the math stopped respecting my state of mind.
Convenience platforms are optimized for certainty. They reward decisiveness and penalize pause. If you hesitate, the system nudges — then charges — until hesitation becomes expensive enough to convert into action.
That’s not service. That’s pressure with a receipt.
I wasn’t willing to pay extra just to move uncertainty forward. Especially when I didn’t even know what I wanted yet.
So I closed the app.
No argument. No rant. No sunk-cost rationalization.
Just a recognition that some systems aren’t meant to be “worked with” unless you already fit their shape.
Sometimes the most rational response to friction is not optimization — it’s disengagement.
If a process only functions when you stop thinking, the problem isn’t your indecision.
It’s the fee structure.
