Jerry’s Marginalia — “Next-Gen Is a Subscription, Not a Revolution”



“Next-gen” used to mean a shift. New rules. New risks. New instincts.

Now it mostly means the same games running a little smoother on a pricier box with a longer wait.

That isn’t failure. That’s normalization.

Cross-gen stopped being a bridge and became policy. Budgets inflated. Release windows stretched. A full “generation” now delivers one game and several returns of the last one.

No one is lying when they say the hardware is stronger. They’re just dodging the real question:

What demanded that strength?

Because when vision doesn’t force the hardware forward, the hardware exists to justify itself.

Ray tracing became the bullet point. Resolution became the pitch. Performance modes became the compromise we pretend is progress.

It’s nicer. It’s cleaner. It’s not a revolution.

What’s being sold isn’t a leap. It’s continuity with a new SKU.

The industry still speaks in eras, but it behaves like a subscription: incremental upgrades, higher prices, longer commitments, less surprise.

That doesn’t make the games bad. It makes the label dishonest.

So when “next-gen” gets announced again, Jerry checks the receipt.

If it’s more power without new language, more cost without new ideas, more patience demanded from the player—

That’s not a new generation.

That’s a renewal notice.


Power does not crown a generation. Purpose does.
