Jerry's Marginalia — The Check Engine Light Doctrine

Researchers have identified a fascinating human behavior.

When a machine displays a warning light, the machine is immediately accused of being dramatic.

📋

The machine may be overheating.

The machine may be low on oil.

The machine may be attempting to prevent catastrophic failure.

None of this matters.

The light itself is considered the true problem.

Researchers refer to this as:

The Check Engine Light Doctrine.

Under this doctrine, the following procedures are authorized:

Repair of the actual issue is considered optional.

🦝

Jerry has observed that humans often apply this same maintenance strategy to themselves.

A person may spend months saying:

"I'm tired."

"I'm stressed."

"I'm not doing so great."

"Something feels wrong."

These statements are generally acknowledged with:

"You'll be fine."

"Walk it off."

"Just stay positive."

"Everyone feels that way."

Researchers classify these responses as:

Percussive Maintenance for the Soul.

💀

Curiously, the warning signs are rarely hidden.

Most people do not explode without notice.

They become quieter.

Or louder.

They stop sleeping.

They sleep too much.

They stop showing up.

They keep showing up while running entirely on fumes.

They joke about things that are not actually funny.

They smile when they are unhappy.

They say:

"I'm fine."

when they are clearly not fine.

The dashboard light is already on.

The vehicle is merely continuing down the highway.

This creates a secondary phenomenon.

The Mask.

🎭

The Mask is not necessarily a lie.

Sometimes the Mask is:

"I still have bills to pay."

Sometimes the Mask is:

"I still have responsibilities."

Sometimes the Mask is:

"I don't have the luxury of falling apart right now."

Researchers emphasize that many masks are survival equipment.

Problems begin when the wearer forgets where the mask ends and the person begins.

At this stage, the machine may begin producing unusual sounds.

Grinding.

Rattling.

Smoke.

Interpretive dance.

Additional warning lights may activate.

These warning lights are also ignored.

📋

Research indicates that acknowledging one ignored warning often leads to the discovery of several others.

This outcome is considered undesirable.

Eventually, something breaks.

Then everyone becomes confused.

Meetings occur.

Investigations begin.

Witnesses emerge.

Statements are collected.

Researchers review months of prior evidence.

The findings are always the same.

The warning signs were visible from orbit.

🦝

The explosion was not the beginning of the problem.

It was merely the moment everyone finally looked at it.

Jerry would like to clarify that not every warning light indicates disaster.

Sometimes the issue is minor.

Sometimes the operator must take responsibility.

Sometimes the machine genuinely needs maintenance.

Most often, reality contains a little of both.

The machine matters.

The operator matters.

Ignoring either one tends to produce interesting results.

And by "interesting," researchers mean paperwork.

📋💀

Final Research Note:

If a machine spends six months asking for help and eventually ejects a piston through the hood, the piston is not the mystery.

The mystery is why everyone spent six months arguing with the dashboard.

🦝

End Marginalia.
