🇯🇵 Japan in the 1980s — Queer Existence Was Visible, But Not Loud
Japan wasn’t some utopia. But it wasn’t aggressively purging queer existence either. It existed in a strange cultural middle:
Queerness Existed in Everyday Life
- Tokyo had queer nightlife districts (esp. Shinjuku Ni-chōme)
- Drag, cross-gender performance, and gender-bending comedy existed in mainstream media
- Cross-gender characters and “boys who want to be girls” concepts appeared without panic
- Trans entertainers existed on TV and variety shows
Not celebrated. Not demonized. Present.
Japan treated gender variance as:
“A thing that exists. Sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, sometimes human.”
Meanwhile…
🇺🇸 America in the 80s — Queer Existence Was Political, Feared, and Criminalized
The U.S. was entering a deeply conservative pendulum swing.
Context of the 80s U.S. Culture
- Reagan politics
- Christian Right dominance
- “Family values” propaganda
- Queerness heavily stigmatized
- Trans existence either erased or sensationalized
- Media depicted LGBTQ+ people as punchlines or predators
Then came the nuclear bomb:

- Government ignored it
- Society blamed queer people
- Families disowned loved ones
- Queer communities had to build their own medical care networks
- Visibility became a survival tactic
Being queer in 80s America wasn’t just identity. It was resistance.
The Contrast
Japan: “They exist.”
U.S.: “They are a threat.”
So a character like Catherine/Birdo?
Japan: “Okay cool. Catherine.”
U.S.: “PANIC BUTTON. SCRUB IT. SAY SHE’S CONFUSED. MOVE ON.”
2️⃣ Why Nintendo of America Censored So Much
Nintendo of America in the 80s was terrified of two monsters:
1️⃣ The American Moral Guardians
2️⃣ Congressional Regulation
They had lived through:
- Comics Code Authority
- Movie moral panics
- Arcade bans
- Satanic Panic
They understood one law of survival:
“Don’t give America anything to attack.”
So NoA imposed iron-clad censorship rules:
- No religion
- No sex
- No blood
- No death references
- No obvious queerness
- No “controversial” identity content
They were pre-emptively obedient.
Birdo’s Japanese canonical identity?
“A boy who wants to be a girl.”
Nintendo Japan: Cool.
Nintendo America: 😰 “WE’RE GONNA GET SHOT.”
So they rewrote it into:
“He thinks he is a girl.”
Which is:
- Not neutral
- Not respectful
- Just safely dismissive
Their goal wasn’t accuracy. Their goal was avoiding lawsuits, church outrage, and Congressional hearings.
And when the U.S. later threw moral outrage at games in the 90s? Nintendo got to say:
“See? We’re clean. We censor ourselves. We’re safe.”
Business move. Coward move. Strategic move. All true.
3️⃣ Where Birdo / Catherine Fits Into This
Birdo isn’t just a quirky Mario character. She’s historically significant.
She is:
- One of the earliest mainstream video game characters with trans-coded identity
- Written as such deliberately
- Recognized in Japan as Catherine
- Treated in later years as unambiguously female
- Paired romantically with Yoshi in Japanese continuity
But in the West? She lived in identity limbo for decades. Because acknowledging her meant admitting:
- Queer identity existed early in gaming
- Nintendo wasn’t “wholesome and straight-coded”
- Kids handled it just fine in Japan
- Western censorship was cultural insecurity — not necessity
Which is why some fans STILL deny it. Not because the truth isn’t there. But because acknowledging it collapses the myth of “Mario has always been straight-coded safe Americana fun.”
Birdo proves gaming always had queer roots. Culture tried to bury it. She outlived them.

The truth is simple:
Japan documented a character. America performed a panic. Fandom inherited the confusion.
And Catherine? She didn’t flinch.
She tanked:
- localization censorship,
- cultural erasure,
- and thirty years of selective memory,
and still made it to Mario Kart looking fabulous.
The moral isn’t “Look how progressive Nintendo was.”
The moral is:
“Look how fragile Western morality was — and how loudly it needed to pretend queerness didn’t exist.”
History doesn’t erase truth. It just delays when you’re finally forced to read it.
And Catherine’s page? Never left the book.
