JM #1 — “Show Up at 8:56”
I showed up at 8:56.
Not 9:03. Not 9:07. Not strolling in with coffee and vibes.
8:56.
Because if you tell me 9:00, I translate that as “be early.”
Everyone else trickled in like the weather wasn’t real.
9:01. 9:04. 9:05.
We still ended early. We still got credited for the full block.
Which is interesting.
Because effort and outcome don’t always correlate in institutional spaces.
You can:
- Show up disciplined.
- Show up prepared.
- Show up structured.
And still end up in the same room as someone who barely slid in.
That’s not unfair.
That’s systems.
Systems don’t reward punctuality emotionally. They reward compliance functionally.
I complied.
I was there.
I observed.
No donuts. No breakfast. Just policy talk and existential seasoning.
And here’s the thing:
I wasn’t mad.
I was studying.
There’s a difference between chaos and looseness.
This wasn’t chaos.
It was operational elasticity.
And I clocked it.
Not to judge. Not to complain.
Just to understand the temperature of the room.
Because if I’m playing a long game?
I need to know how tight the system actually runs.
Answer?
Tight enough to document. Loose enough to breathe.
That’s useful information.
