THE HIMALAYAN MONK OF HORNY RESTRAINT VS. THE EMOTIONAL MICROTRANSACTION INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
Or: I May Be Horny, But My Wallet Has Taken a Vow of Celibacy.
By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand
A Jerry's Marginalia — by Department of Petty Affairs
Ladies, gentlemen, sexually frustrated philosophers, and whichever corporate executive just tried to put a monthly subscription on an erection:
WE HAVE A FUCKING PROBLEM.
Not a new problem.
Not even a particularly complicated problem.
It's the same ancient problem humanity has faced since the first caveman looked at another caveman and thought:
“Damn. Would.”
Except now, instead of gathering flowers, writing poetry, or awkwardly asking somebody whether they want to share a roasted mammoth, we've invented a sophisticated digital infrastructure designed to separate horny people from their disposable income.
WELCOME TO THE EMOTIONAL MICROTRANSACTION INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.
Where attraction is a market opportunity.
Flirtation is a conversion funnel.
And apparently, every boner comes with a fucking billing address.
But the industry has overlooked one very important development.
Somewhere high in the Himalayas, beyond the mountains of impulse purchases and the valleys of regrettable subscriptions, sits a man.
A Paladin.
A Monk.
A magnificent bastard who has achieved the impossible.
HE IS HORNY.
HE KNOWS HE IS HORNY.
AND HE STILL WON'T GIVE YOU FIVE FUCKING DOLLARS.
The prophecy has been fulfilled.
CHAPTER I: THE ANCIENT ART OF NOT BUYING SHIT
The average digital intimacy merchant operates on a simple assumption:
If someone wants something badly enough, they'll pay for it.
And sometimes that's true.
People pay for entertainment.
People pay for companionship.
People pay for photographs, videos, games, subscriptions, and an astonishing variety of things that would make their grandparents spontaneously combust.
Nothing inherently wrong with that.
People can sell consensual adult entertainment.
Customers can buy it.
Everybody understands the transaction.
Wonderful.
BUT WANTING SOMETHING DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MAKE IT A GOOD PURCHASE, YOU ABSOLUTE WALNUTS.
I want a mansion.
I want a personal chef.
I want a gaming computer powerful enough to render the individual hairs on Satan's left testicle.
That doesn't mean I'm about to finance any of those things at 29.99% APR.
And yet the digital intimacy economy sometimes behaves as though sexual attraction temporarily removes a person's ability to perform basic arithmetic.
Oh, you're horny?
PAY UP.
Still horny?
PAY AGAIN.
Not satisfied?
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU QUALIFY FOR OUR PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP.
Somewhere, an accountant just achieved enlightenment.
Unfortunately for the accountant, so has the Paladin.
And his enlightenment costs absolutely fucking nothing.
CHAPTER II: THE HIMALAYAN MONK OF HORNY RESTRAINT
Picture a remote monastery.
Snow falls gently upon ancient stone steps.
The wind carries the distant chanting of monks.
A bell rings.
Incense burns.
A solitary figure sits in perfect meditation, contemplating the eternal struggle between human desire and financial responsibility.
Suddenly, a notification appears.
“Hey handsome. I've got something special for you. 😘”
The Paladin opens one eye.
“Interesting.”
“It's really intimate. Want to unlock it?”
The Paladin closes his eye.
“No.”
“But aren't you horny?”
“Immensely.”
“Then why won't you pay?”
The Paladin smiles.
The mountains fall silent.
A thousand years of wisdom condense into a single sentence:
DESIRE IS A FEELING. SPENDING IS A DECISION.
The earth trembles.
A nearby yak achieves financial independence.
Three marketing executives burst into tears.
And somewhere in Silicon Valley, a customer-retention algorithm screams into the void.
THE MONK HAS SUBDUED THE HORNY.
Not eliminated it.
Not denied it.
Not pretended he has transcended the biological realities of being a human being.
He simply acknowledges the feeling without surrendering control of his wallet.
Because being horny isn't a legally binding contract.
AND YOUR DICK DOES NOT HAVE POWER OF ATTORNEY OVER YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
CHAPTER III: THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT OF HORNY
Naturally, the industry has prepared a counterattack.
If individual purchases aren't enough, why not offer financing?
After all, nothing makes romance more exciting than a payment schedule.
WELCOME TO YOUR PREMIUM INTIMACY HEALTH PLAN.
Monthly premium: $299.99.
Annual deductible: $1,500.
Flirtation copay: $5.99.
Special content: Subject to prior authorization.
Emotional satisfaction: Not guaranteed.
Happy ending: Out of network.
CUSTOMER: “I'd like to speak to somebody.”
REPRESENTATIVE: “Certainly! Basic conversation is included in your plan.”
CUSTOMER: “Wonderful.”
REPRESENTATIVE: “However, meaningful affection requires a specialist referral.”
CUSTOMER: “And intimacy?”
REPRESENTATIVE: “Have you met your deductible?”
CUSTOMER: “WHAT FUCKING DEDUCTIBLE?!”
REPRESENTATIVE: “Sir, please remain calm. Your arousal is currently under review.”
At this point, you're not being seduced.
YOU'RE FILING A FUCKING INSURANCE CLAIM.
Imagine explaining this to your ancestors.
“Grandfather, in the future, we shall communicate instantly across the planet.”
“Astonishing!”
“And we shall access nearly all human knowledge from devices in our pockets.”
“Magnificent!”
“And we shall pay $5.99 to discover whether a stranger has sent us a photograph of their ass.”
Grandfather walks directly back into the ocean.
Evolution has requested a refund.
CHAPTER IV: THE GREAT MIMIC HUNT
In the ancient role-playing games, a mimic was a monster disguised as treasure.
A chest.
A door.
Perhaps a suspiciously attractive piece of furniture.
The adventurer approaches, hoping to discover something valuable.
SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKER.
The treasure chest has teeth.
Modern digital adventurers face a similar uncertainty.
Except instead of finding gold, they encounter a mysterious notification promising something intimate.
Is it a real person?
An automated account?
A scripted sales pitch?
An actual creator offering a legitimate product?
You can't necessarily tell from one message.
And suspicion alone doesn't establish deception.
But when every road seems to lead to another checkout screen, the weary adventurer begins to recognize a pattern.
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: “I have something special for you.”
PALADIN: “Does it require money?”
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: “Well, just a little—”
PALADIN: “No.”
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: “But don't you want to see?”
PALADIN: “Yes.”
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: “Then unlock it!”
PALADIN: “Still no.”
MYSTERIOUS STRANGER: “YOU'RE SO FUCKING BROKE!”
The Paladin considers this accusation.
He looks at his wallet.
He looks at the stranger.
He looks back at his wallet.
“Correct. And getting poorer isn't going to help.”
DIVINE SMITE ACTIVATED.
Not against a human being.
Not against somebody's property.
Against the fucking sales pitch.
DELETE CONVERSATION.
A brilliant flash of holy light erupts across the digital dungeon.
The notification vanishes.
The subscription offer dissolves into smoldering ash.
The imaginary mimic leaves behind a black crater against the wall.
GOLD SPENT: 0.
BOUNDARY MAINTAINED: 100%.
HORNY STATUS: STILL HORNY.
FINANCIAL STATUS: UNCHANGED.
The Paladin returns to meditation.
The yak nods approvingly.
CHAPTER V: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WANTING AND NEEDING
Here's something that apparently needs to be explained to an industry populated by people who have mistaken libido for a credit score.
You can want something without needing to possess it.
You can find somebody attractive without paying for their attention.
You can appreciate someone's work without purchasing every piece of content they offer.
You can enjoy flirtation without accepting an invitation to spend money.
And you can experience desire without treating it like a medical emergency requiring immediate financial intervention.
This isn't repression.
It's judgment.
It's the difference between walking past a bakery, smelling freshly baked cinnamon rolls, and thinking:
“Holy shit, those smell wonderful.”
And walking into the bakery, emptying your savings account, and taking out a second mortgage on a fucking pastry.
THE CINNAMON ROLL DOES NOT CONTROL YOU.
Neither does the thirst trap.
Neither does the checkout screen.
Neither does the seductive little notification informing you that something very special is waiting.
You can appreciate the advertisement.
You can even enjoy the advertisement.
And then you can close the advertisement and go make a sandwich.
THIS IS NOT A TRAGEDY.
This is a functioning adult making a purchasing decision.
Somebody alert the shareholders.
CHAPTER VI: THE CORPORATE WAR ON POST-NUT CLARITY
For generations, humanity has recognized the peculiar phenomenon of post-nut clarity.
A person becomes intensely distracted by desire.
Then, after the biological urgency passes, suddenly everything seems different.
The fog clears.
The judgment returns.
The questionable decisions become painfully obvious.
But our Himalayan Monk has discovered a revolutionary technique.
WHAT IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO MAKE THE QUESTIONABLE PURCHASE FIRST?
What if you could simply sit there?
Feel the feeling?
Acknowledge the attraction?
And wait?
No credit card.
No impulse purchase.
No expensive lesson disguised as a premium unlock.
Just a little patience and the understanding that desire is not an emergency.
POST-NUT CLARITY WITHOUT THE NUT.
The marketing department is horrified.
The finance department has declared a national emergency.
The monastery has begun accepting applications.
And the Paladin?
He's still horny.
HE'S JUST NOT FINANCIALLY STUPID ABOUT IT.
CHAPTER VII: THE INDUSTRY DISCOVERS ITS NATURAL PREDATOR
Somewhere in a glass office building, an emergency meeting has been called.
EXECUTIVE: “Ladies and gentlemen, our engagement metrics are declining.”
ANALYST: “Customers are refusing premium unlocks.”
EXECUTIVE: “Impossible. Are they no longer attracted to our content?”
ANALYST: “Oh, they're attracted.”
EXECUTIVE: “Then what's the problem?”
ANALYST: “They've learned to say no.”
The room falls silent.
EXECUTIVE: “Have we tried calling them broke?”
ANALYST: “Yes, sir.”
EXECUTIVE: “And?”
ANALYST: “One of them thanked us for noticing.”
An executive faints.
EXECUTIVE: “Offer a discount!”
ANALYST: “He declined.”
EXECUTIVE: “Offer a subscription!”
ANALYST: “He deleted the conversation.”
EXECUTIVE: “OFFER HIM LOVE!”
ANALYST: “He asked whether it came with dental coverage.”
The stock market doesn't actually crash.
But somewhere, a fictional graph drops so violently that it punctures the floor and lands in Gerald the Cactus's apartment.
Gerald immediately invests.
Gerald is now bankrupt.
Again.
CHAPTER VIII: THE OATH OF THE UNBOTHERED
Let us be perfectly clear.
This is not a crusade against adult entertainment.
This is not a condemnation of creators charging for their work.
This is not a declaration that anybody owes somebody else affection, photographs, intimacy, or free conversation.
NOBODY OWES YOU THEIR BODY.
NOBODY OWES YOU THEIR ATTENTION.
AND YOU DON'T OWE ANYBODY YOUR FUCKING WALLET.
Transparent commerce is commerce.
Consensual entertainment is entertainment.
And a customer declining a purchase is not an act of aggression.
It is simply a decision.
The problem begins when desire is treated as leverage, when affection is presented ambiguously, or when refusal is met with pressure and insults.
You are allowed to want something.
You are allowed to decline it.
You are allowed to be attracted to somebody and still decide that the price, the circumstances, or the entire experience isn't worthwhile.
That is the sacred teaching of the Himalayan Monk.
Not celibacy.
Not bitterness.
Not pretending temptation doesn't exist.
SELF-CONTROL WITHOUT SELF-DECEPTION.
And so the Paladin raises his hand and recites the ancient oath:
I shall remain consistent in my boundaries.
Extravagant in my mockery.
Economical in my expenditures.
I shall acknowledge the horny.
I shall not surrender my treasury to the horny.
And when the merchant mistakes my desire for an obligation to purchase...
I SHALL BE BORING AS FUCK.
The monks bow.
The yak applauds.
The algorithm requests counseling.
MR. JERRY'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE
Listen here, you glorious collection of hormones, bad decisions, and browser histories that should probably remain private.
Being horny is not a character flaw.
It's a feeling.
It's a perfectly ordinary part of being alive.
Sometimes it's inconvenient.
Sometimes it's hilarious.
Sometimes it arrives at three in the morning wearing a metaphorical clown suit and demanding that you reconsider every sensible decision you've made this week.
But here's the beautiful part.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO OBEY EVERY FEELING YOU EXPERIENCE.
You can be hungry and decide not to buy an overpriced meal.
You can be angry and decide not to start a fight.
You can be lonely and decide not to settle for a miserable relationship.
And you can be horny and decide that your money would be better spent on literally anything else.
A sandwich.
A video game.
A comfortable pillow.
A savings account.
A replacement smoke detector, because Gerald tried to microwave a fucking cactus.
The possibilities are endless.
So enjoy the fantasy when you knowingly choose it.
Support creators when you genuinely value what they're selling.
Have fun.
Flirt.
Laugh.
Appreciate beauty.
Be ridiculous.
But when somebody assumes that your attraction means your financial judgment has evaporated, remember the words of the Himalayan Monk:
DESIRE IS A FEELING.
SPENDING IS A DECISION.
And if the price of admission is more than you're willing to pay?
CLOSE THE FUCKING TAB.
THE FINAL COMMANDMENT
DESIRE IS A FEELING. SPENDING IS A DECISION.
You may tempt the flesh.
You may excite the imagination.
You may offer a thousand digital treasures wrapped in ribbons, hearts, and suspiciously expensive promises.
But the treasury remains under the jurisdiction of the Paladin.
And the Paladin has spoken.
“I'M HORNY, NOT FUCKING BANKRUPT.”
A Jerry's Marginalia — by Department of Petty Affairs
Where the raccoon bites ankles, the Paladin subdues the horny, and Gerald the Cactus has just enrolled in a twelve-month intimacy payment plan.
His first payment bounced.
His second payment bounced.
His girlfriend turned out to be a decorative succulent.
She has excellent credit.
He does not.
