The Will to Resist

the joker’s testimony #0009

unfiled addendum

anon: why not just be normal for her?

joker: normal? ha! normal’s the coffin they bury you in while you’re still twitching. you think i’m gonna trade in the mrrrow for a beige “good morning”? no no no. the joke isn’t to play along. the joke is to stay the cat in a world of dogs and still walk away with the grin.

anon: so you’d rather lose her than adjust?

joker: lose what exactly? a candle that dies if i don’t hover it with a lighter? oh please. i’m not in the business of babysitting a fire. i’m in the business of watching who burns with me and who sputters out when the wind blows.

anon: so where does that leave you?

joker: right where i belong — lane painted in chaos stripes, no turn signals, laughing while the traffic jams behind me. see, peace isn’t silence. peace is when the noise doesn’t touch you. and if she couldn’t laugh with me? then the punchline was never for her.
