anon: are you mad?
joker: mad? oh, i’m furious! mad because i showed up every day with spark, and she treated it like static on her radio. mad because i dimmed myself to keep her comfy, while she leashed herself to worse clowns.
anon: so what now, then?
joker: now? i laugh. because the joke’s on me, right? borrowing money like no one’s ever struggled before. playing demon to her angel, only to be branded the blasphemer. telling jokes she couldn’t even hold without getting offended.
anon: so you hate her?
joker: hate? oh, no no no. that would give her too much credit. i wanted her to laugh with me — but if she can’t even keep the rhythm, then she was never part of the act.
anon: and where does that leave you?
joker: where i always belong — cigarette smoke in the alley, cards in one hand, dynamite in the other. because if the judge is out to play, then i’m the punchline waiting in the dark.
