THE STINGY BASTARD WHO BROKE THE HORNY ECONOMY
Or: How One Man Refused to Finance the Emotional Microtransaction Industrial Complex
By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand
A Jerry's Marginalia — by Department of Petty Affairs
Ladies, gentlemen, mimics, and whatever the fuck Gerald the Cactus identifies as this fiscal quarter:
We have a crisis.
Not a recession.
Not inflation.
Not another corporation charging $12.99 a month for a feature that used to be free.
WORSE.
Somewhere on the internet, a man has discovered that he can be horny WITHOUT OPENING HIS FUCKING WALLET.
And the entire emotional microtransaction industry is having a goddamn aneurysm.
Because apparently, in the modern economy, being attracted to someone is no longer a feeling.
It's a fucking purchase order.
CHAPTER I: THE BAIT, THE SWITCH, AND THE BALLS
Our story begins with a simple interaction.
A man meets a woman online.
They exchange pleasantries.
They flirt.
Perhaps there's some banter. Perhaps a joke about nuts. Perhaps an unsolicited philosophical discussion about why a cactus should never be allowed near a conveyor belt.
Everything seems perfectly normal.
Until—
DING!
"Would you like to have some sexy fun with me?"
Well, that's certainly an interesting proposition.
But then comes the invoice.
PAY TO UNLOCK.
Oh.
So this wasn't a conversation.
THIS WAS A FUCKING VENDING MACHINE WEARING LIPSTICK.
Now, to be clear, there's nothing inherently wrong with selling adult entertainment. People can offer it. People can buy it. Everybody gets to make their own decisions.
But don't pretend you're offering genuine personal affection when what you're actually offering is a shopping cart.
There's a difference between flirting and operating a horny tollbooth.
And our Paladin?
He declines.
No screaming.
No negotiating.
No frantic reaching for the emergency credit card.
Just a magnificent, economically responsible:
NAH.
Somewhere, a projected sales figure dies.
CHAPTER II: THE GREAT TEXTUAL EXTORTION
But the story doesn't end there.
Oh, no.
Because when the first attempt fails, the sales department apparently discovers another revolutionary product.
WORDS.
That's right, motherfuckers.
WORDS.
The same words human beings have been exchanging since we figured out how to communicate without throwing rocks at each other.
Except now they're premium.
"Would you like some naughty chatting?"
Sure. Conversation can be fun.
"Then pay for it."
PAY FOR WHAT? THE FUCKING ALPHABET?
Are vowels included?
Does punctuation cost extra?
Is an exclamation point considered premium stimulation?
Can I get a refund if the dirty talk has grammatical errors?
What happens if somebody types "mmmm" instead of "mm"?
IS THAT A FOUR-CHARACTER SURCHARGE?
At this point, Jerry the Raccoon has entered the accounting department and begun chewing through the ethernet cables.
The quarterly earnings forecast now reads:
ERROR 404: CUSTOMER REFUSES TO BE A DUMBASS.
CHAPTER III: THE AUDACITY OF THE STINGY ACCUSATION
Now comes the most beautiful part.
The customer has declined the sexual offer.
He has declined the premium conversation.
He has declined to purchase the deluxe collector's edition of somebody pretending to be interested in his nuts.
And what does he get?
"You're stingy."
STINGY?!
BROTHER, YOU TRIED TO SELL HIM A CONVERSATION AND GOT MAD WHEN HE DIDN'T BUY THE FUCKING DICTIONARY.
This is the part where the corporate boardroom starts smoking.
Because the accusation is supposed to hurt.
It's supposed to make the customer feel inadequate.
It's supposed to trigger that ancient male instinct to prove his worth by throwing money into a furnace labeled POTENTIAL INTIMACY.
But something has gone terribly wrong.
Our Paladin doesn't reach for his wallet.
He doesn't defend his financial honor.
He doesn't take out a personal loan to prove he has disposable income.
He simply remains consistent.
"Okay."
And then, in a plot twist worthy of the most incompetent romantic comedy ever produced:
"But I still like you."
WELL, FUCKING EXCELLENT!
THEN WE CAN TALK!
WITHOUT A CASH REGISTER!
WITHOUT A SUBSCRIPTION!
WITHOUT A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE NAMED DESTINY ASKING WHETHER I'D LIKE TO UPGRADE TO THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE PLATINUM PACKAGE!
HOLY SHIT. HUMAN INTERACTION. WHAT A CONCEPT.
Of course, someone saying they like you doesn't prove their intentions either way.
Maybe they're sincere.
Maybe they're flirting.
Maybe they're trying another sales approach.
We don't know.
And that's precisely why the Paladin doesn't need to invent a backstory.
He only needs to decide what he's willing to pay for.
Which, in this particular situation, is absolutely fucking nothing.
CHAPTER IV: INTRODUCING SWEATY NUTZ™ — THE ECONOMIC RESISTANCE COLLECTION
Naturally, the Department of Petty Affairs has responded to this market crisis with three new snack products.
Because when society loses its fucking mind, we manufacture peanuts.
BAG #27 — PAY-TO-LAY NUTZ™
"All the Seduction. None of the Transaction."
For those moments when romance arrives carrying a credit-card reader.
BAG #28 — PAY-PER-MOAN EDITION™
"Now Charging by the Fucking Syllable."
A delicious reminder that typing three suggestive sentences doesn't automatically make you a telecommunications provider.
BAG #29 — STINGY BUT STILL SEXY EDITION™
"You Can Call Me Cheap. You Still Can't Have My Money."
Honey-roasted. Financially disciplined. Absolutely devastating to anyone relying on guilt as a payment processor.
All three products contain real nuts.
Unlike certain business models, which appear to consist entirely of artificial promises and recurring billing.
Gerald has volunteered to be our brand ambassador.
His application has been rejected because he keeps trying to charge customers $5.99 to look at the fucking ingredients.
CHAPTER V: THE ECONOMICS OF NOT GIVING A SHIT
Here's the beautiful thing.
Our Paladin isn't declaring war on sex.
He isn't declaring war on women.
He isn't even declaring war on people who sell adult entertainment.
HE'S DECLARING THAT HIS WALLET IS NOT A PUBLIC UTILITY.
You can want something without buying it.
You can enjoy flirting without financing it.
You can appreciate someone without becoming their monthly revenue target.
You can be attracted to somebody and still say:
"No thanks. I'm good."
And if someone calls you cheap?
Wonderful.
Cheap is an opinion.
Debt is a number.
And that number has a nasty habit of showing up long after the flirting has disappeared.
Meanwhile, the person who declined the transaction still has their money.
Their boundaries.
Their dignity.
And possibly a family-size bag of Sweaty Nutz™.
THAT'S WHAT WE CALL A BALANCED FUCKING PORTFOLIO.
CHAPTER VI: THE COMMANDMENT THAT BROKE THE CASH REGISTER
There was once a simple philosophy:
"Desire is a feeling. Spending is a decision."
Elegant.
Practical.
A little too sensible for an internet where somebody can apparently monetize the phrase "hey handsome."
But then came the accusation.
"You're stingy."
And the philosophy evolved.
Not because the Paladin needed to defend himself.
Not because he was angry.
But because consistency deserves a goddamn closing argument.
And so, from the smoking ruins of the premium-chat checkout screen, came the updated commandment:
"Desire is a feeling. Spending is a decision. And calling me stingy won't change either."
There it is.
No loopholes.
No introductory discount.
No limited-time offer.
No fucking coupon code.
THE WALLET REMAINS CLOSED.
And here's the part that really terrifies the imaginary corporate executives gathered around their mahogany conference table:
The customer isn't miserable.
He's laughing.
He's making jokes.
He's inventing snack flavors.
He's having a wonderful fucking time.
WITHOUT BUYING THE PRODUCT.
The horror.
The absolute, unspeakable horror.
FINAL VERDICT: THE CUSTOMER IS NOT BROKEN. THE SALES PITCH JUST FAILED.
Somebody somewhere is going to read this and say:
"But you're missing out!"
Maybe.
That's allowed.
Missing out on something you don't want to pay for isn't a tragedy.
It's a choice.
And nobody owes a seller a purchase just because the seller made an offer.
You don't have to insult the salesperson.
You don't have to invent sinister motives.
You don't even have to explain yourself.
You can simply decline.
And if they keep pushing?
THROW THE FUCKING DEUCES.
Because a boundary that disappears the moment somebody calls you cheap was never much of a boundary to begin with.
As for Jerry?
I'm going back to the dumpster.
Gerald is already there, trying to sell premium access to the trash.
I told him nobody was paying.
He called me stingy.
I BIT HIS FUCKING ANKLE.
JERRY'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE™
Be horny if you want. Be romantic if you want. Buy entertainment if you genuinely want it. But never confuse somebody else's sales target with your personal obligation.
SWEATY NUTZ™ — OUR NUTZ ARE REAL. OUR BOUNDARIES ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE.
