The Will to Resist

THE PEACH COBBLER OF DOOOOOOM!

How Grandma's Dessert Empire Continues to Expand

A direct continuation of THE APPLE PIE OF DOOOOOOM!

By Jerry “The Ankle-Biter” Silverhand

There are moments in history when humanity should simply know better.

The invention of nuclear weapons.

The introduction of subscription fees for everything.

The decision to put raisins in perfectly good potato salad.

And, apparently, the moment Grandma announced that she was making peach cobbler.

It had been a peaceful morning.

The Apple Pie of DOOOOOOM had been served. The world's leaders had received their complimentary slices of accountability. Gerald the Cactus had filed his inspection report, and Jerry the Raccoon had been temporarily banned from handling cutlery.

Everything was under control.

Or so humanity thought.

Grandma opened the refrigerator.

She examined the peaches.

She examined the butter.

She examined the flour.

Then she smiled.

"Well, bless my heart. It's time."

Somewhere, a government emergency hotline began ringing.

THE PEACH COBBLER PROJECT HAD BEGUN.

CHAPTER ONE: THE RETURN OF THE APRON

Grandma wasn't particularly interested in world domination.

She had already established that.

She wasn't interested in conquering nations, building an army, or demanding tribute from the population.

She had a kitchen.

She had an apron.

And she had absolutely no intention of cleaning up everybody else's mess.

But after the success of the Apple Pie of DOOOOOOM, something had changed.

People were beginning to understand the consequences of their decisions.

Some had apologized.

Some had taken responsibility.

Others had attempted to blame Grandma.

One particularly ambitious individual had filed a formal complaint claiming that the comfortable bed of consequences was psychologically distressing.

Grandma read the complaint.

She adjusted her spectacles.

"Well, sugar, would you like another pillow?"

The complaint was immediately withdrawn.

Grandma returned to the kitchen.

She had peaches to prepare.

CHAPTER TWO: A NEW THREAT EMERGES

The Department of Petty Affairs received an anonymous tip.

GRANDMA IS DEVELOPING A SECONDARY DESSERT WEAPON.

The situation was classified as potentially catastrophic.

Gerald the Cactus was dispatched immediately.

He arrived wearing his identification badge, carrying a clipboard, and displaying the facial expression of a cactus who had already regretted accepting the assignment.

"Ma'am, we've received reports of a new dessert."

Grandma smiled.

"Oh, hello, Gerald! Would you like some lemonade?"

Gerald hesitated.

"Is it contaminated?"

"Of course not, honey."

"Does it contain unauthorized ingredients?"

"Peaches, sugar, butter, flour, and a little cinnamon."

Gerald checked his clipboard.

"Is there a possibility of psychological manipulation?"

Grandma tilted her head.

"Well, I suppose a good dessert can change a person's perspective."

Gerald made a note.

Jerry, meanwhile, was already inside the kitchen.

He had discovered the peaches.

He had eaten one.

Then another.

Then a third.

Grandma looked over.

"Jerry."

The raccoon froze.

"Those are for the cobbler, sugar."

Jerry slowly placed the remaining peach down.

A formal investigation into fruit-related misconduct was opened.

CHAPTER THREE: THE COBBLER OF DOOOOOOM

The ingredients were assembled.

The peaches were sliced.

The butter was prepared.

The sugar was measured.

The kitchen smelled wonderful.

Grandma worked with the confidence of someone who had spent decades perfecting the art of making people reconsider their life choices through baked goods.

The cobbler emerged from the oven.

Golden.

Bubbling.

Warm.

A beautiful crust rested above the sweet peaches, and the aroma carried through the cottage.

The world's leading culinary scientists were summoned.

They inspected the dessert.

Poison?

Negative.

Radioactivity?

Negative.

Dark magic?

Negative.

Unholy ingredients?

Negative.

Excessive deliciousness?

The lead scientist took another bite.

He stared into the distance.

"I need to call my mother."

Grandma smiled.

"Well, isn't that sweet?"

Then came the inevitable question.

"WHY DO YOU CALL IT THE PEACH COBBLER OF DOOOOOOM?!"

Grandma placed her hands on her apron.

"Because, darlin', y'all keep making the same mistakes and expecting different results."

Silence.

"Now, who's ready for dessert?"

CHAPTER FOUR: THE COMFORTABLE CONSEQUENCES, NOW WITH PEACHES

Naturally, one visitor was particularly unhappy.

He stormed into Grandma's cottage.

"YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!"

Grandma looked up.

"Done what, sugar?"

"YOU'VE MADE EVERYONE ACCOUNTABLE!"

Grandma blinked.

"Well, I certainly hope so."

"YOU CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS!"

"Doing what?"

"MAKING PEOPLE FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR ACTIONS!"

Grandma considered this for a moment.

Then she pointed toward the guest bedroom.

"Would you like the memory foam mattress again?"

The visitor stared.

"WHAT?"

"Fresh sheets, orthopedic pillows, and a lovely quilt. I even put a little lavender sachet on the nightstand."

"YOU'RE MOCKING ME!"

"Oh, honey. I'm offering hospitality."

The visitor threw his hands into the air.

"YOU'RE IMPOSSIBLE!"

Grandma smiled.

"Well, bless your little heart."

She placed a warm bowl of peach cobbler on the bedside table.

"Now, eat something. Nobody makes good decisions on an empty stomach."

The visitor sat down.

He ate.

He thought.

And for the first time in several years, he considered whether perhaps the problem wasn't Grandma.

Perhaps it was him.

Grandma quietly returned to her knitting.

Another successful intervention.

CHAPTER FIVE: THE DEPARTMENT OF PETTY AFFAIRS STRIKES BACK

The DPA convened an emergency tribunal.

The charges were extensive.

  1. Unauthorized distribution of accountability.
  2. Excessive hospitality toward people experiencing consequences.
  3. Psychological sass exceeding established federal limits.
  4. Repeated violations of the world's collective comfort zone.
  5. Production of desserts with potentially civilization-altering flavor profiles.

Gerald the Cactus presented the evidence.

Jerry the Raccoon served as an expert witness.

Unfortunately, Jerry was eating peach cobbler during the proceedings.

The chairman requested that he stop.

Jerry refused.

The chairman requested that he return the silverware.

Jerry denied possessing any silverware.

Three spoons fell out of his coat.

The hearing was temporarily suspended.

Grandma was eventually summoned.

She entered the room carrying a covered baking dish.

The chairman looked nervous.

"Mrs. Grandma, do you understand the seriousness of these allegations?"

"Of course, honey."

"Do you deny producing the Peach Cobbler of DOOOOOOM?"

"No, sir."

"Do you intend to continue?"

Grandma smiled.

"Well, I've already bought the peaches."

The chairman closed his folder.

The tribunal was adjourned.

The DPA had reached a conclusion.

There was no reasonable way to prosecute a woman whose greatest crime was refusing to clean up everybody else's bullshit.

CHAPTER SIX: SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY. NORTHERN CONSEQUENCES.

The world eventually learned to recognize the warning signs.

A clean kitchen.

A warm oven.

A freshly washed apron.

And Grandma humming quietly while preparing dessert.

The Apple Pie of DOOOOOOM had established the principle.

The Peach Cobbler of DOOOOOOM reinforced it.

You could make mistakes.

You could hurt people.

You could neglect responsibilities.

You could spend years convincing yourself that somebody else would eventually clean up the mess.

But eventually, the consequences would arrive.

And Grandma would be waiting.

Not with a weapon.

Not with a threat.

Not with a demand for revenge.

Just a warm kitchen, a comfortable chair, and a generous serving of peach cobbler.

Because accountability doesn't require cruelty.

Boundaries don't require hatred.

And hospitality doesn't mean allowing people to walk all over you.

Grandma understood that.

Humanity was still working on it.

EPILOGUE: THE DESSERT EMPIRE EXPANDS

The evening was peaceful.

Grandma sat on her porch, enjoying a cup of sweet tea.

Gerald the Cactus had completed his inspection and was contemplating early retirement.

Jerry was licking peach filling off his paws.

The silverware remained missing.

Grandma looked toward the sunset.

"Well, boys, I think we've done enough for today."

Jerry burped.

Gerald said nothing.

Then Grandma reached for her notebook.

She examined the next page.

A little smile appeared.

Jerry noticed.

"Oh, no."

Gerald turned.

"What is it?"

Grandma adjusted her spectacles.

"Well, I've been thinking about pecan pie."

Somewhere across the planet, humanity collectively fainted.
